Which Bank Charges can I claim back?

Before you can start claiming back your charges, you first need to know the total amount that you have been charged.

How many years of charges can I claim back?

You can claim back the last 6 years worth of charges. However, if you live in Scotland you can only claim back the last 5 years of charges. So, the quicker you start the process of claiming back your bank charges, the more you can claim back!

What types of charges can I claim back?

The only charges that you can claim back are penalty charges, for breaking the terms and conditions of your contract with the bank. Examples of these charges are for:

  • Going over your authorised overdraft limit
  • Bouncing a Direct Debit
  • Bouncing a Standing Order
  • Bouncing a Cheque
  • Bouncing a Switch payment

Basically, any penalties which get charged for unauthorised borrowing.

Standard charges such as interest, fees for running an account etc cannot be claimed back.

Business Bank Charges

As well as being able to claim back your charges on Personal Accounts, you can also claim back bank charges on business accounts, although the procedures are slightly different.
